With Christmas fast approaching – and the annual shopping frenzy gathering pace – check out Swedish designer Elin Sigrén’s web shop for some great and unique jewellery pieces, cleverly created from discarded china and porcelain crockery.
From her studio in Malmö, Elin collects and re-cycles porcelain plates and china, combining selected sections with silver for her ‘Dining with Grandma’ collections. The collection is split into two distinct looks. Fresh ‘50’s and ‘60’s graphic patterns in green and white from classic Swedish porcelain makes up one look; whereas the ‘Duchess Garden’ collection offers the alternative of a kitsch feast of sweet birds and pretty pink roses.
Elin was inspired to use old crockery, because of the nostalgic, emotional link they form with the remembered warmth of shared family meals. She told ARTS THREAD ‘they remind me of Sunday dinners at my grandmother’s house.’ With the ongoing fragmentation of the traditional family, and communal meals becoming a rarity for many, this link to a bygone time will resonate with many.
Interest in this young Swedish designer’s work at London Fashion Week’s Esthetica exhibition, in September was tremendous. Showing for the first time in London, Elin added substantially to her growing list of clients who now include influential retailers, as far afield as Isetan in Japan.
Vintage buttons also feature in her collections, as Elin has collected these obsessively for years. Each piece in her collection is completely unique yet surprisingly affordable and the choice is wide – including pendants, rings, bracelets and some beautiful headpieces.
For a truly special gift, Elin also offers a bespoke service – transforming unused family porcelain pieces into new and wearable heirlooms.
Sägen is exhibiting this weekend at the Angel Christmas Fair, Candid Arts, London.
